The French Alps and Salt Lake City-Utah Will Host the Olympic Winter Games 2030 and 2034

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the election of the French Alps as the host of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2030 and Salt Lake City-Utah as the host of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2034. This decision was taken by the IOC Members today during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris.

The principle of a double allocation for the Olympic Winter Games in 2030 and 2034 by the IOC Session in 2024 was unanimously approved by the IOC Session held in October 2023 in Mumbai.

The Olympic Winter Games are returning to France for the fourth time (Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968), and the first time in 38 years, since Albertville 1992.

The 2030 project is inspired by an ambition to unite the northern and southern Alpine regions of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur under the global banner of the "French Alps" to achieve long-lasting social, economical, and environmental benefits for a wide geographical region. It aims to create a new model for the Olympic Winter Games as the first edition to be aligned with the Olympic Agenda 2020.

The French Alps 2030 Olympic Winter Games aims to unite the north and south French Alps and make them a hub for winter sport, to bring maximum social and economic benefits to their communities.

The Games will be held around four main venues: Haute Savoie Zone, Savoie Zone, Briançon Zone, and Nice Zone. Three venues for Albertville 1992 form part of the French Alps 2030 master plan: La Plagne's sliding track, the Courchevel ski jump, and Méribel's Roc de Fer downhill Alpine skiing course. The other proposed snow venues are in La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, Serre Chevalier, and Montgenèvre.

The Alpine skiing events at the Winter Olympics will be held in Courchevel and Méribel.

The Olympic Winter Games 2030 are proposed to be held from 1–17 February 2030. The Paralympic Winter Games will follow from 1–10 March 2030.

Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 has the ambition to extend the transformative benefits of Salt Lake City 2002 to a new generation and make the resources and experience of Utah available for the benefit of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.

The competition venues will be organized in two zones: The Salt Lake City zone for most of the ice venues, and the Wasatch Back Mountain Zone for most of the snow venues and the sliding center.

There would be two stand-alone venues: Snowbasin and the Peaks Ice Arena in Provo. The Alpine Skiing events will be held in three in Snowbasin.

10 out of the 13 venues have been used in the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

The Olympic Winter Games 2034 are proposed to occur from 10–26 February 2034. The Paralympic Winter Games would follow from 10–19 March 2034.

This will be the fifth Olympic Winter Games held in the United States (Lake Placid 1932, Squaw Valley 1960, Lake Placid 1980) and the first since Salt Lake City hosted in 2002.

The 142nd IOC Session also approved the Olympic Winter Games' initial sports program, as the IOC Executive Board proposed, including seven sports: biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating, and alpine skiing.
