Olympic champion Sofia Goggia’s high-risk skiing was rewarded with a dominating win today in a St. Anton Women's Downhill.
Coming down with bib number 5, Goggia attacked the Karl Schranz racecourse and left no doubt that her time of 1:24:06 would withstand anyone’s chance to take the victory.
"Today, I knew I had to attack the course, and especially on the lower half, I could feel I was fast (...) Although I felt good on the lower half of the course, I wasn’t entirely sure until I saw my time and then I thought to myself, ‘today I am unbeatable", Goggia said.
"In Val d'Isere I knew I could get 'easily' on the podium but here I thought that maybe the giant slalom skiers could have won. I had just one strategy and that was to get out of the start gate and bring intensity and energy in my skiing, and I think I made it. Now the red bib is mine ya, but it's the same, we keep on going, race by race. You know how it works!",
Goggia added.
Austrian Tamara Tippler came in second place +0.96 off the top mark. The Austrian Super-G specialist jumped up on her first World Cup Downhill podium ever racing on home snow.
Breezy Johnson finished in third place +1.04 behind Goggia.
For Breezy Johnson, it was her third, third-place downhill finish of the season and her third podium of her entire career. Johnson took third place at both downhill races in Val d’Isere in December.
“I watched Sofia’s run and I think that it was incredible (...) She skied with a lot of courage", Johnson said.
The fastest skier in yesterday’s training, Ester Ledecka finished just shy of the podium in fourth place 1.16 behind.
